Training / Education
Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) and training workshops will be organised in the framework of GENIEUR to train early stage scientists in basic as well as clinical science with specific skills in the field of IBS.

It is our pleasure to announce the second COST Action BM1106 GENIEUR (Genes in Irritable Bowel Syndrome Research Network Europe, www.GENIEUR.eu) Training School entitled
“Molecular Methods in IBS Research: genetics, epigenetics and microbiota research”
in conjunction with the GENIEUR Final Conference. The Training School will take place from March 11 to 13, 2016, at the “ZMBH” - Zentrum für Molekulare Biologie at the University of Heidelberg, Im Neuenheimer Feld 282, D-69120 Heidelberg, Germany.
This year, the Working Groups 3 and 4 (Genetics / Epigenetics and Microbiota) of the COST Action BM1106 GENIEUR have organised this Training School in collaboration with the Initial Training Network NeuroGut (www.neurogut.eu).
One of the major goals of GENIEUR is to encourage young colleagues to get engaged in translational neurogastroenterology research. With this Training School we will offer a platform for the young scientists as well as the more established colleagues from all Working Groups involved in the Action to get introduced to the background knowledge about the state of the art in experimental methods and analysis techniques in genetics/epigenetics and microbiota research. It is our pleasure to announce the first Training School entitled “Assessment of IBS in clinical practice & research: an introduction for scientists” in conjunction with the GENIEUR Spring Meeting 2014 at the NH Hotel Rallye in Barcelona, Travessera de les Corts 150 – 152, 08028 Barcelona, Spain. The training School has been organized by Working Groups 1 and 2 (Clinical characterisation and Intermediate traits) in collaboration with the Chairs of the COST Action BM1106 GENIEUR (Genes in Irritable Bowel Syndrome Europe).
One of the major goals of GENIEUR is to encourage young colleagues to get engaged in neurogastrointestinal basic research. With this Training School we will offer a platform for the young scientists as well as the more established colleagues from Working Groups 3 and 4 (Epigenetics and Microbiota) involved in the Action to get introduced to the background knowledge about the clinical aspects of IBS: diagnosis and treatment as well as its characterisation. As Training Schools within the frame of COST aim at widening, broadening and sharing knowledge relevant to the Action’s objectives through the offer of training on a new and emerging subject, two hot topics not to be missed are the role of nutrition and microbiota in IBS as well as the introduction of the current case report form and inventories for case control characterisation.

Short Term Scientific Missions (STSM)
Short Term Scientific Missions (STSM) are aimed at supporting individual mobility and at strengthening the existing networks and fostering collaborations by allowing scientists to visit an institution or laboratory in another Participating COST Country or an approved COST Near Neighbours Countries institution or an approved International Partners Countries institution. A STSM should specifically contribute to the scientific objectives of the COST Action, while at the same time allowing applicants to learn new techniques or gain access to specific instruments and/or methods not available in their own institutions.
The evaluation of STSM applications is performed by the Steering Committee. The selection of applicants is based on the scientific scope of the STSM application that must be in line with the Action objectives. Necessary geographical and gender balance issues are to be taken into consideration and applications from Early Stage Researchers (ESR) should be privileged.
STSM applicants must be engaged in a research programme as a postgraduate student or postdoctoral fellow, or be employed by or officially affiliated to an institution or legal entity. This institution is considered as the Home institution. Institutions may be public or private entities.
Standard STSMs may last between 5 and 90 days with a maximum grant sum of 2500 €. ESRs may extend the duration of the STSM beyond the 90 days to a maximum of 180 days. The maximum grant sum of elongated ESR STSMs is 3.500 €.
In order to receive a STSM grant, the applicant must
- Obtain the written agreement of the host institution, before submitting an application
- Complete the online application form (see https://e-services.cost.eu/stsm )
- Send the completed file as e-mail attachment together with the necessary supporting documents (CV, full work plan, list of publications, motivation letter, letter of support from the home institution etc.) to the STSM host institution and to the
